Polytechnic of Porto

History

  • In 1852, the Porto Industrial School, later called the Porto Commercial and Industrial Institute, is established.
  • In 1918, the Industrial Institute and the Commercial Institute separate formally.
  • Their names, as we know them today, are created only 60 years later.

Education

  • Our vocation is to teach: not only knowing how to know, but also knowing how to do and knowing how to be.
  • We do not just claim it, we do it. We are at the forefront of higher education in Portugal: eight schools, 56 undergraduate courses, 62 master's programs and 18 500 students make up an open, challenging and multicultural community.
  • Our profile is balanced with about 1500 teachers with academic as well as technological or business competences and skills, and with teaching practice supported by research that is nationally and internationally recognized.

Research

  • The priority action axis of P.PORTO in R&D aims at generating knowledge to meet society’s great challenges, whether they are of a local, regional or international nature.
  • Our activities encompass from advanced scientific research to the application of research results for social and technology development.
  • The continuous search for knowledge, the creation of new knowledge, this is a fundamental aspect of our mission. This aspect of the mission becomes complete when research has impact and allows evolution of the society around us.
  • The will and ability to promote the societal impact of our research is essential to our activity. These are the guidelines that drive the research process at P.PORTO.

Career

  • The Psychological And Career Services (GIAP - Gabinete de Integração Académica e Profissional) aims to provide quality, efficient services to help graduate and current students build skills, improve their well-being and achieve personal and academic success.

Student services

The Academic Organization Office (GOA) is a facilitator service to assist with academic issues. We help with applications, requests and other documents, simplifying the recognition of qualifications and competences process.

GOA is responsible for the educational, academic and disciplinary matters of P.PORTO’s students, whose competence does not belong to the respective organic units or management bodies with specific responsibility.

Thus, its responsibilities include drawing up notices and warnings related to enrollment, registration, examinations, tests, transfers, readmissions, course changes, special qualifications, payment of fees and registering all acts related to students’ academic life.

Housing services

  • P.PORTO's network of residences extends from Porto to Vila do Conde, bringing together three campuses, eight schools and hundreds of students. Come get to know us better! P.PORTO covers an area of influence that extends from the North Coast to the interior of the region.
  • There are eight schools spread across three campuses that show the umbilical connection with the needs of the region and the optimization of their skills and resources.
  • At Campus 1 in Porto we find four P.PORTO residences with access to a wide range of services.
  •  Also in Campus 2 of Póvoa de Varzim / Vila do Conde we can find two residences.
  • On Campus 3 there are no P.PORTO residences.

Library services

The P.PORTO Division of Information and Documentation collects and prepares all the documentation necessary to the management and organisation of the institution, by making publicly available Meeting Minutes, Strategic Plans, Rules and Regulations, Resolutions of the Management Council, among other documents from each training or research unit or transverse to all management bodies.

Campus life

  • Today, the Asprela district represents one of the largest campus of talent, knowledge and innovation in Europe. In fact, in a little more than a square kilometer work more than 14,000 people, mostly with higher qualifications and in functions of great complexity.
  • The district also hosts some 38,000 students in more than 500 higher education programs and launches more than 10,000 graduates a year, which accounts for about one-third of the regional total. The users of the hospital services and the numerous external visitors: researchers, lecturers and business clients must also be considered.

Sports facilities

  • The Polytechnic of Porto offers sports facilities to its academic community, as well as various sports activities.
  • On the other hand, at Asprela Campus, there are several public and private spaces / gyms for the development of sports activities.

Student clubs

  • Since it was founded in 1985, P.PORTO’s students have organised themselves in associations as the result of the coordination of wills and t teamwork. These associations or organisms known as Students’ Unions (AE’s – Associações de Estudantes) play a vital role representing and defending students’ rights in the Schools’ management.
  • Students’ Unions let student concerns be heard and encourage student participation in the construction and implementation of the adopted institutional policies. Apart from representation, student associations are also involved in various other areas, such as providing services (stationery, photocopying, etc.), organising scientific, cultural, sports and recreational activities.
