The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. The Medical Center opened in 1955, but its beginnings date to 1903 when a two-year medical school was established on the parent campus in Oxford. In that era, certificate graduates went out of state to complete their doctor of medicine degrees.
Our educational vision is to train committed health care professionals who work together to improve health outcomes and eliminate health disparities. As the only academic health science center in Mississippi, UMMC is the leader in providing health care professionals for the state. The programs of study lead to careers that are in ever-increasing demand in Mississippi and beyond. At UMMC, student achievement reflects the institutional commitment to train healthcare professionals.
From world-renowned studies on heart disease, diabetes and hypertension to advanced treatment for cancer and a human physiology simulation program used by NASA, researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center are unraveling the diseases that affect Mississippians, creating new, high-tech jobs, and injecting tens of millions of dollars annually into the state's economy. UMMC aims to lead the way to discoveries that will raise the health level of Mississippians and, indeed, all mankind.
On any given weekday, about 20,000 employees, students, patients, family members, vendors and other guests are present on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus. Managing this “city within a city” is the task of the UMMC Administration.
Library orientation and instruction sessions are available to all UMMC students, faculty and staff. Classes are given for individuals or groups, with content tailored for the individual or academic program needs. To schedule one or more courses, please contact your department liaison.
