Founded in 1724 by Peter the Great, Saint Petersburg University was to become the first institution of higher education in Russia. SPbU is a leading Russian university with teaching and research excellence ranked among the world’s top universities.
Every year over 3,000 international students enroll in SPbU on main and additional educational programmes. They are also admitted to academic exchange programmes organised by SPbU in partnership with international universities. We maintain strong links with 413 universities in 67 countries worldwide. Nine of them offer double degree Master programmes.
International students can apply for RF government-funded places or self-finance their studies.
In St Petersburg State University offers 17 Master programmes in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. International students willing to study Russian can enroll on the additional educational programme 'Russian as a Foreign Language'.

Accommodation at SPbU's halls of residence is provided to all international students on main educational programmes of higher and middle level professional education. Halls of residence are located in the historical centre of St Petersburg and in Peterhof. The Peterhof campus is a comfortable, safe and secure environment within walking distance of the University buildings. The halls have all the necessary amenities, including network connection.
Students are welcome to make use of the vast collections of the Research Library named after Maksim Gorky. The Library comprises over 6,9 mln. books and manuscripts, over 63,000 rare books, 2.4 mln. records in the electronic catalogue, over 82 mln. full-text electronic copies, over 83,000 titles of electronic journals, and over 17, 000 titles of electronic books.
The University life is vibrant and diverse. Every year, the University holds over 300 student events, celebrations, conferences, and competitions. Among them are spring and winter balls; jazz, symphony orchestra, choir, and rock concerts; festivals of student creativity; championships in boardgaming and quizzes; photo exhibitions; tours around St Petersburg and its suburbs; theatre outings, and many others.
The University offers a range of sports to engage students of all interests: football; swimming; rowing; boxing; rugby; judo; mountaineering; sailing; biathlon; climbing; basketball; beach volleyball. The University teams take part in Russian and international sporting events, win various awards and first prizes.
Students from other countries are welcome to join the International Students’ Club. The Club is an opportunity to meet new friends, learn more about Russia and its culture, exchange national cultural experiences, get help and advice.
