University of Lapland

Located in the city of Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, the University of Lapland is an international, multidisciplinary university whose areas of expertise include Arctic affairs, service design and tourism research.

History

Originally established in 1979 to provide higher education opportunities for those living in the far reaches of northern Finland, the university has now become an important educational institution for the entire country.

Education

  • International degree studies based on the latest cross-disciplinary research
  • True Northern curricula and expertise available at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral study levels. Aim of the education is to give student  tools to understand and manage change in the Arctic and the north - and then in the world.
  • A wide selection of multidisciplinary minors and methodological and language studies programmes with special focus on giving unique professional qualifications
  • Areas of teaching and research are art and design, education, law, social sciences, tourism research and northern and Arctic issues.
  • Cutting-edge research facilities of the Arctic Centre and the Lapland Institute for Tourism Research and Education

Research

At the heart of our university’s research profile lies Arctic and northern change. The effects of the global economic and political changes and global warming are particularly severe in the Arctic region. We produce scientific knowledge on northern societies and environment and their interaction with each other to ensure that life in the Arctic and northern regions will flourish also in the future.

Strategic research focuses are  sustainable development, law and justice; northern wellbeing, education and work; responsible tourism and culture-centered service design.
