History
The University of West Bohemia (UWB) was established by the decree of the Czech National Council in 1991 when the Institute of Technology in Pilsen and the College of Education were merged.
Education
The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen provides a wide variety of courses for both Czech and international students. It is the only institution of higher education in this part of the country which prepares students for careers in engineering (electrical and mechanical), science (computer science, applied mathematics, physics, mechanics), education (both primary and secondary), economics, philosophy, politology, archaeology, anthropology, foreign languages, law and public administration, art and design.
Research
The research and development activities are based in the departments. There are, however, also interdepartmental and interfaculty teams which to work on projects closely related to the fields offered in the Ph.D. study programmes at the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
Research and development focuces on three types of activities:
- research, aimed at obtaining knowledge of basic phenomena and observable facts
- applied research, directed towards a specific and practical goals
- experimental development, which employs existing knowledge obtained through research or based on experience

Student services
The International Office encompasses the following activities:
- Providing information about EU educational programs
- Counselling on study and workplacement opportunities abroad
- Coordinating programme Erasmus+ on the institutional level
- Recruiting and taking care of international students
- Recruiting and taking care of international lecturers
- Organising the annual International Summer Language School (ISLS)
- Developing and strengthening international links on the institutional level
- (in cooperation with international partners, foundations, embassies etc.)
- Marketing the University abroad
Campus life
The University campus, in particular, is currently undergoing very dynamic changes – with an annex to the University Library building, and new buildings of the European Centre of Excellence NTIS and the Centre of Technical and Natural Science Education and Research literally growing in front of our eyes. These investments are the largest in the history of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and, in the future, they will form a very promising base for even more intensive co-operation with universities all over the world not only in the field of Research and Development, but also in student mobilities.
Student clubs
- International students organizations locating at the University of West Bohemia have their seat at the Student center at the Faculty of Economics.
- The Student Union (SUS) is an organization which provides various services for students and organizes sporting, cultural and other events
