In 1971, René Descartes - Paris V University was created as a result of the reform of the University of Paris, whose Faculties of medicine, pharmacy, humanities, sciences and law were split and divided into 8 universities located in Paris.
Paris Descartes University offers training courses in all the important fields of knowledge. This multidisciplinarity allows PDU to offer competitive career-oriented courses and guarantees research excellence. It is the only university of the Ile-de-France region to offer medical, pharmaceutical and odontological studies;
Research at PDU revolves around various scientific issues. It is conducted by more than 4,000 persons affiliated to 85 laboratories, which more particularly interact within federative (Federative Institutes of Research) or multidisciplinary structures (Paris Descartes University Institutes, top thematic focuses). Strategic tools (platforms) are made available to researchers. Research strategy policies are determined by the Scientific Board and implemented by the relevant administrative departments.

At the University head office, the Board of Studies and University Life serves as the main reception desk for students.
This is especially the case for the Student Help Service which includes the Student Reception Desk. It is a one-stop service centre which deals with different aspects of student life.

The inter-university department of Medicine for the prevention and promotion of health (SIUMPPS) is in charge of students’ health.

Paris Descartes University owns 50 acres of buildings, some of which are both prestigious and listed buildings such as la Sorbonne and the headquarters of the University, on 12 rue de l’École de medecine, in the 6th arrondissement, formerly the Royal College of Surgery.
