The Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A. degree) is the highest postgraduate degree in Business & Management education. It takes between 3-6 years to graduate a DBA programme.
The DBA degree represents the next academic step after a Master of Business Administration (MBA). It is often taken by people who are looking for a new challenge. Usually, they already have an MBA degree and many years of work experience. Many business schools actually require several years of experience in Management to be admitted for a Doctor of Business Administration programme.
The main difference between a DBA degree and a regular Ph.D. in Business Administration is the research focus. While regular Management Ph.D.s prepare you for an academic role at a business school or for a research position, the D.B.A. programme equips students with practical knowledge they can apply in the business environment.
D.B.A. courses include research, but the main focus is not on expanding the existing literature. Students often start from an existing situation, like a problem within their company. Using the new information from D.B.A. classes, they engage in thorough research and look for a solution. This process often becomes the basis for the dissertation, in which you have to present a theoretical model of a problem and possible solutions.
