History

Chiang Mai University was founded in January 1964, under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU was the first institution of higher education in the north, and the first provincial university in Thailand.

Education

CMU offer 14 multidisciplinary graduate courses including four newly opened; Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering (international), Master of Arts Program in Art and Culture Management. but also best suits the students interests and the changing demands of the workplace. In collaboration with foreign universities, CMU faculties, and the International Relations Division offer courses, ranging in length from two weeks to a full academic year, that focus on aspects of Thai and Asian language, culture, history, and society.

Research

CMU continues to expand its national and international collaborative research activities. CMUs research funds for 2008 were made up of US$ 6,382,926 from Internal fund and US$ 17,903,037 from external funding.In addition to the discipline-specific research facilities to be found within individual faculties, we have established three interdisciplinary Research Institutes to develop CMUs excellence in research and development in a variety of fields, primarily collaborative research projects between specific academic disciplines.

Student services

International students are admitted to international programs on the basis of satisfying the minimum standards for English language ability and the required academic qualification for each program.Applicants whose first or native language is English will be exempted from the English Placement Test, but will still be required to take entrance examinations as specified by individual faculties/colleges.

Housing services

The International Hostel, meant for short and longer term visitors, has 86 standard rooms and two suites. All of the rooms and suites are fully furnished and air-conditioned.

Library services

The University Library comprises the Central Library and 19 affiliated, discipline-specific libraries located on campus in faculties, institutes, and centres. Its current inventory over 1,000,000 books of which 308,482 are in English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and other foreign languages 4,238 Thai journals, 3,340 foreign journals, 35 Thai and English newspapers etc.

ICT services

Constituted from the consolidation of the resources of the CMU Computer Service Center (established in 1975) and the CMU Information Technology Center, it is ITSCs mission to provide the university and the community with software products, and consulting services. Moreover, it provides education and technical services for e-Learning, e-Business, and e-Government.

Medical services

A first-aid clinic for students and staff, located next to the CMU Officials Club, is open weekdays, excluding public holidays, from 08.30 16.30. The Student Health Service, at the Faculty of Medicine, also provides medical care. Open on Saturday and Sunday, from 10.00 - 12.00 and 13.30 - 15.30.

Campus life

We have four campuses together, the main campus, Suan Sak campus, is located about 5 kilometres west of the city center. Set against the backdrop of Doi Suthep Mountain, this campus occupies an area of 615 acres (249 hectares).

A little closer to the city, the Suan Dok (Garden of Flowers) campus occupies an area of 110 acres (45 hectares). CMUs latest acquisition is the Lamphun Sri Bua Baan campus. Located about 55 kilometres south of Chiang Mai on a 1,890-acre (765-hectare) site close to Lamphuns industrial centre, this campus provides additional training and research facilities with emphasis on industrial management and efficient energy utilization.

Many sports fields, indoor and outdoor athletic courts, fitness parks, and a 50-meter swimming pool are located on our main campus. The range of international sports available on and off campus includes:

Chiang Mai University Business School had been proudly AACSB Accredited since 2021. View our AACSB Accreditation certificate. All of our undergraduate and graduate programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
