Overview

As a PhD candidate in this Phd Leadership and Organisation specialisation offered at BI Norwegian Business School , you will be part of an internationally oriented research community, and most of our candidates have top international scholars on the defence committees. Several of our PhD candidates publishes in well-known journals and get their papers accepted at prestigious conferences such as SIOP and AOM before they have defended their theses. 

This four-year doctoral specialisation in Leadership and Organisation is designed to produce graduates that are able to contribute to the advancement of research and practice within the fields of human resource management, organisational behaviour, and organisation science. 

The programme focuses on developing the doctoral candidates' theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers. The programme adheres to an open and diverse view of research, and welcomes both quantitative and qualitative research.

Objectives

This four-year doctoral specialisation in Leadership and Organisation is designed to produce graduates that are able to contribute to the advancement of research and practice within the fields of human resource management, organisational behaviour, and organisation science. The programme focuses on developing the doctoral candidates' theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers. The programme adheres to an open and diverse view of research, and welcomes both quantitative and qualitative research.

The department seeks candidates with a strong background in disciplines that are relevant to the subfields described above, who are intellectually curious, interested in an academic career in research and teaching, and who possess strong communication and analytical skills.

The doctoral programme is an important element of the Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour's research agenda and of BI Norwegian Business School's vision to become a leading research-based business school in Europe.

Features of this programme

We want the candidates to be active partners of the research and teaching conducted by the department. We require that the candidates regularly attend the department seminar series and the PhD seminar series (arranged four times a year). 

These seminar series have contributed to a friendly and productive work environment among our candidates and a learning environment that builds bridges between candidates with research interests from different subfields. 

We also encourage and assist our candidates in developing an international academic network by way of our faculty's network with distinguished scholars and through attendance at major international conferences such as the annual meeting of the Academy of Management.

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

General requirements

Applicants must:

  • have at least five years of higher education
  • hold a two year scientific Master's degree (MSc) (120 ECTS) with B average or better
  • hold a Master's degree that includes thesis work (15 to 30 ECTS)
  • hold a Master's degree within the fields of economics and business administration or an area in which BI offers a PhD specialisation
  • hold degree(s) from an accredited institution or an institution recognised by NOKUT

In particular cases GMAT or GRE tests and/or TOEFL or IELTS tests may be required. Applicants will be informed if this is needed. 

BI will need percentile scores and raw scores for the Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing sections of the GRE or GMAT to consider your application.

There are no tuition fees in the PhD programme at BI. However in order to have an application to the PhD programme at BI considered you need to have funding.
