Overview
The Ph.D is a research doctorate that is pursued mainly through individual guided study with some supplementary coursework. Ph.D students pursue their scholarly interests under the guidance of scholars who are appointed to enlighten, direct, and evaluate in accordance with international standards and the Ph.D programme provide opportunity for promising individuals to pursue intensive specialization in a specified area of educational studies. Their efforts in critical review of literature, formulation of ideas, research construction, and theory building will benefit from a variety of activities that include research seminars, coursework, comprehensive examination, and guided research for thesis.
About the programme
- Advancement to PhD candidature is conditional upon completion of coursework requirements and passing of a qualifying examination.
- Within twelve months after advancement to PhD candidature, the candidates in the Education programme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong must submit a thesis proposal to the Graduate Panel.
- After the thesis proposal is approved, the candidate should submit a thesis and pass the oral defence within a prescribed period of time for graduation.

General requirements
- a Master’s degree from a recognised university; or
- a Bachelor’s degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a Master’s degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
- have been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognised university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council.
