The International Master’s Program (IMAP) in Japanese Humanities (founded 2011) and the International Doctorate (IDOC) in Japanese Humanities (founded 2017) are the only two graduate programs conducted in English within Kyushu University’s Graduate School of Humanities.

Overview

Graduate Japanese Humanities seminars at Kyushu University emphasize premodern Japan and its relationship to East Asia; these are supplemented by courses offered by affiliated and guest faculty in topics ranging from Japanese film to archaeology.

  • There are also courses in field-specific methodologies, research methods, and premodern languages (bungo and kanbun).

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Visiting faculty offer intensive courses or special lectures. Scholars visiting from institutions in the USA, Europe, Australia, and Asia rank among world experts in their fields. 
  • They are chosen to enhance the curriculum or to support the research pursued by a particular student. 
  • Lectures and courses frequently include field trips to historic sites, museums, and other cultural activities (films, theater).

  • Applications for IMAP and IDOC are received for Fall and Spring entry. IMAP applicants should note that the curriculum is structured on a Fall-Spring calendar and are therefore strongly encouraged to apply for Fall entry. 
  • Spring entry is typically restricted to students graduating from universities that use the Japanese calendar (Spring entry) or have other extenuating circumstances.
