About

Sustainable use of resources is imperative for the future of humankind, nature and planet Earth. The Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources doctoral programme from University of Helsinki focuses on plant production, forests, domestic animals, technology, the environment and economy.

Overview

Many of the research fields included in AGFOREE integrate basic and applied research. Natural processes in phenomena spanning scales from the molecular to the global are explored together with their socio-economic aspects and related environmental policy context.

A Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources doctoral programme from the University of Helsinki comprises a doctoral thesis and 40 credits of doctoral studies.

The studies are divided into scientific content and transferable skills studies.

The programme organises theoretical and methodological courses with content suitable for all AGFOREE members. You can also complete doctoral-level courses from other Finnish Universities, as well as from international Universities and research institutes.

Programme Structure

  • The doctoral dissertation and related research are the most significant and extensive part of a doctoral degree.
  • A doctoral dissertation is a consistent scholarly work based on independent research that makes an original contribution to scientific knowledge. It can be a monograph or based on articles. In the natural sciences, dissertations are typically based on articles.
  • The humanities and social sciences have traditionally preferred monographs, although the number of article-based dissertations is continuously increasing in these domains, with most dissertations already being article-based in such fields as the educational sciences.
