Overview

While pre-clinical departments conduct and supervise research mainly in laboratories, clinical departments do so in both laboratories and clinical settings. Research students of the Faculty enjoy the benefits of working in state-of-the-art laboratories and technologically advanced core facilities.

The Faculty attracts high-calibre candidates to enroll in its research postgraduate programmes. The programmes are not only popular among graduates in medical disciplines, graduates in physical sciences, engineering, computer sciences and social sciences are also encouraged to apply.

Programme Structure

PhD candidates are required to undertake research studies in a chosen field of study under supervision of at least one supervisor. The result of the research, presented in the form of a thesis, must be submitted for examination by the end of the prescribed period of study.

A successful PhD thesis should represent the result of the candidate's research which should be an original contribution to knowledge and worthy of publication.

 

Coursework requirement                                                                     

4-year PhD: 4 Graduate School compulsory courses (Introduction to Thesis Writing, Research Ethics for Graduate Students, Transferable Skills, Research Methods) and 3 Medical Faculty Research Postgraduate electives

3-year PhD: 1 Graduate School compulsory course (Research Ethics for Graduate Students)

Eligibility: Full-time candidates

Stipend: HK$26,600 (~US$3,400) monthly

Travel allowance: HK$13,300 (~US$1,700) annually

Accommodation: Guaranteed hall place of the first year with possibility of renewal 

Composition fees: Waived for the first year

 

HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship

Eligibility: Selected awardees of HKPF

Award (in addition to HKPF): HK$40,000 (~US$5,200) in year 1; HK$20,000 (~US$2600) per year in the remaining normative study period

Composition fees: Waived

Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS)

Eligibility: Full-time candidates

Stipend: HK$18,030 (~US$2,300) monthly

 

University Postgraduate Fellowships

Eligibility: Full-time candidates

Award: HK$70,000 (~US$9,000) on top of PGS
