While pre-clinical departments conduct and supervise research mainly in laboratories, clinical departments do so in both laboratories and clinical settings. Research students of the Faculty enjoy the benefits of working in state-of-the-art laboratories and cutting-edge core facilities.

The Doctor of Philosophy program at The University of Hong Kong is not only popular among graduates in medical disciplines, graduates in physical sciences, engineering, computer sciences and social sciences are also encouraged to apply.
Programme Structure
Research component
Candidates are required to undertake research studies in a chosen field of study under supervision of at least one supervisor. The result of the research, presented in the form of a thesis, must be submitted for examination by the end of the prescribed period of study.

4-year PhD
- Bachelor's degree at First Class Honours preferably with research experience; or
- Bachelor's degree with Honours at Second Class Division I and a taught Master's degree
- Bachelor's degree with Honours at Second Class Division I or above; and
- Research Master's degree (MPhil)
Tuition Fee
Living costs for Hong Kong
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Funding
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPF)
- Eligibility: Full-time MPhil/PhD candidates
- Stipend: HK$331,200 (~US$42,460) annually
- Travel allowance: HK$13,800 (~US$1,760) annually
Accommodation: Guaranteed hall place for the 1st year with possibility of renewal
Composition fees: HK$42,100 (~US$5,400) waived annually)
HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme (HKU-PS)
Eligibility: Full-time PhD candidates
Cash award: HK$40,000 (~US$5,130) in 1st year; HK$20,000 (~US$2,560) annually in the remaining normative study period
Stipend: HK$331,200 (~US$42,460) annually
Travel allowance: HK$13,800 (~US$1,760) annually
Composition fees: HK$42,100 (~US$5,400) waived annually
