Overview

Three Nova Scotia universities have joined together to offer a world-class doctoral program that draws upon the collective resources of a renowned scholarly community.

The Nova Scotia PhD Program in Educational Studies helps talented scholars develop rich knowledge and advanced research skills so important in today’s rapidly changing world.

This innovative and state-of-the-art Educational Studies program at Mount Saint Vincent University includes:

  • an intensive, on-site summer institute;
  • a slate of interactive, web-enabled courses;
  • a comprehensive scholarly portfolio; 
  • a doctoral dissertation.

Graduates of the program are ideally placed to play leadership roles in a range of academic and professional organizations.

Fields of Study

The PhD Program supports study in six interrelated theme areas (fields of study) that reflect the ongoing research foci of faculty at the participating universities. All of these themes are of growing importance in education. Given our rapid development as a knowledge society, all are ripe for further advanced study and research:

General requirements

  • Possess a Masters degree from a recognized university in education or in a related field of study;
  • Normally, have completed a graduate thesis in a field related to their doctoral studies. Those applicants who have not completed a thesis are required to submit evidence of their ability to undertake research in education through the completion of a qualifying research paper of sufficient depth and scope to reflect their research competence;
  • A minimum of A- or 80% average in his or her highest degree; 
  • A clearly conceptualized idea of an area of research or a research topic the applicant wishes to investigate in the doctoral program.
  • Scholarly preparation to conduct research, normally including graduate level courses in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and design.
