The research is organized in ten research units. Additionally, interdisciplinary research clusters and the «Mobiliar-Lab» complement the research of the individual groups.

The institute has a strong relationship with the Strategic Research Centers (CDE and OCCR), the Center of Competence (CRED), and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies (ICFG).
