The doctoral program in Administrative Science at the University of Bern is organized together with the IDHEAP and USI and is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).

Overview

Within the context of doctoral studies, doctoral candidates must generally provide required transcripts of grades for all doctoral level courses/seminars, amounting to at least 24 ECTS credits. The doctoral program in Administrative Science is offered by the University of Bern

If passed, courses and lectures taken at well-estsablished, recognized institutions offering doctoral degree programs may be counted without grades according to their respective levels, even if transcripts are not provided upon request. A maximum of 50% of the required credits may be accepted without grades. The credits earned are documented in a Diploma Supplement.

The completion of more extensive and cohesive programs (30-60 ECTS credits) is recorded in the Diploma Supplement.

Dissertation

The dissertation is an independent research project. It must focus on a topic of the administrative sciences and should be interdisciplinary in nature. The dissertation comprises a monograph or a compilation of at least three specialized articles in the administrative sciences, with at least two being accepted for publication in recognized journals. Co-authorships are possible, also with one of the reviewers (maximum 50% of the papers, i.e., in the case of three: one). An additional reviewer must then be found for co-authored papers.

General requirements

  • For admission to doctoral study at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences or the Faculty of Law, candidates must have attained the title of Master in Public Management and Policy or, at the University of Bern, the title of Master in Economics or Business Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Law, or a corresponding Licentiate, with an overall grade point of at least 4.75.
  • Equivalent specialized diplomas from other Swiss or foreign universities may be recognized from the most closely associated faculties.
  • Admittance to doctoral studies presupposes that a university lecturer has agreed to mentor/tutor the candidate during the dissertation project.
