Academic career
An academic career is divided into several stages. After graduating, the doctoral thesis provides an opportunity to develop a personal track record in the field of research, acquire methodical qualifications and to create a network in the research community. Depending on the model chosen for the doctoral thesis, the position and the funding, different levels of participation are required in the teaching activities and the self-administration of the university.
Programme Structure
- At the University of Bern, various offices and institutions provide courses on career planning and acquiring key competences.
- It is important to distinguish whether the aim is to enhance specialist skills in the field of teaching or research, to foster networking in the scientific community, to strengthen cross-curricular competences (with a view to conveying and translating research issues in other fields) or to conduct a professional assessment.
- Depending on the necessary input and the time available, a wide range of courses is available ranging from career advice to the certificate in university didactic.
