Overview
Education
In terms of research, the History and Philosophy of Economics program at the University of Lausanne is interested in the historical development of economic and political ideas and methods, the institutional and material settings in which these ideas and methods are produced and used, and their social and normative implications and impact.
Individual PhD projects, or PhD that are part of larger projects funded by external sources such as the Swiss National Science Foundation, are pursued under a very close supervision. As a consequence, our PhD program is very selective, and accepts only a few doctoral students to ensure a high quality and tailor-made supervision project.
Doing a PhD at the Centre Walras-Pareto is also a unique opportunity to be part of a stimulating team of scholars devoted to the history of economic thought and philosophy, who share the scarce characteristic of being both physically present at the University of Lausanne, and well inserted in international networks.
Programme Structure
In a first step, candidates should successfully follow these mandatory lectures:
- History and Philosophy of Economic Thought
- Econometrics
- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
In a second step, doctoral students are required:
- To participate to the internal and external seminars, and to the conferences organised by the Centre Walras-Pareto. The participation to other seminars, such as those organised in HEC, may be required as well;
- To actively participate to conferences in their field;
- To write their dissertation. In principle, the dissertation consists in a monograph. See the regulations on this. The defense of the dissertation is also done in two steps: first in private in front of a PhD committee, and eventually a revised version of the dissertation is presented in front the same PhD committee, in a public session.
