Overview
Through the research that leads to the dissertation and papers, a graduate develops the ability to evaluate the research at the forefront of biomedical engineering based on knowledge of the relevant literature and applicable research methodologies.

- The defining characteristic of this qualification is that the candidate is required to demonstrate high level independent research capability and to make a significant and original contribution at the frontiers of biomedical engineering knowledge.
- The PhD in Biomedical Engineering programme from Stellenbosch University typically requires three years of full-time research (the minimum period is two years), culminating in a dissertation that describes original research and at least two paperssuitable for publication in research journals. The PhD normally follows after a research-based master's degree.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- Due to the interdisciplinary character of the programme, students will normally have a supervisor in one faculty and at least one co-supervisor in another faculty.
- Supplementary coursework (non-credit bearing) may be required of students who do not have the necessary background for their research.
- Supplementary modules may be prescribed by the supervisors and/or the IBE Postgraduate Admissions Committee.
