Overview

You'll learn to carry out independent research and further develop your abilities to think critically and write effectively. With postgraduate study in Art History, you will make an original contribution to knowledge in the field, and help guide our discipline into the future.

Courses include

  • There is an active and dynamic culture of research in Art History at Victoria University of Wellington. 
  • You might choose to explore contemporary New Zealand art, the politics of art and climate change, the narratives of Oceania in art, or look at how artists write about art.
  • You will work closely with curators and experts from the Adam Art Gallery, and draw on collections held in galleries and museums around New Zealand. 
  • You'll also be able to take advantage of Wellington's unique research resources—The National Library and Archives New Zealand.
  • Our staff publish widely and the quality of their research is recognised nationally and internationally.

General requirements

  • Either a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or a Master’s degree from a New Zealand university, with an overall GPA of no less than 6 (letter grade B+);
  • Or to be currently enrolled in a Master’s thesis at the Victoria University of Wellington and meet the requirements for conversion to a PhD;
  • Or to be able to produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Dean, Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research, of adequate training and ability to proceed with the proposed course for the degree—see note below about qualifications from universities outside New Zealand.
  • As well as qualifying for entry, you will need to be accepted by the relevant Head of School and Associate Dean of Postgraduate Research.
