Overview
The primary objective of the center is to promote educational and research activities within developing countries, in order to establish and enhance a scientific generation that will be able to contribute to the resolution of local and regional development-related problems, particularly in the field of health.
Features
- The Medical Research - International Health PhD Program at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich offers academic education and a research environment to scientists from developing countries, with special focus on the Millennium Development Goals.
- Postgraduates who do not originate from developing countries but who have a scientific interest in International Health and development cooperation will also be eligible for the program. Scholarships are available for selected candidates from developing countries.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The Ph.D. curriculum is covering a minimum of three years, with two Module Blocks spent at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich, lasting three months each.
- In between doctoral candidates will conduct their research in their home countries.
- The last and final stay in Munich will be a short period of about two weeks, during which the defense and the MMRS graduation ceremony will take place.

General requirements
- Qualifying degree (successfully completed university bachelor and master degree in a health-related discipline, medical school degree, or adequate equivalent education at the time of application which admits enrollment within a doctoral study program in Germany)
- Minimum total of 3 years university education
- A research topic with a formulated and consistent study proposal
- A local scientific supervisor ready to support the research project in the field throughout the entire curriculum of at least three years
- Sufficient funding for the research project - CIHLMU does not offer any research funding!
- Two scientific referees willing to submit letters of recommendation for the candidate
- Proficiency in English (written and oral)
- Basic knowledge in statistics and the application of statistical software (R and SPSS) is highly recommended. The freeware R will be used in some courses during the Ph.D. program
- Good mathematical and statistical skills are expected.
