Overview
Economics and Finance at Free University of Bozen-Bolzano includes one year of core courses as well as individualized training depending on the specific research interests and objectives of the PhD student as recommended by the supervisor. Topic-specific individual tutoring and mentoring, as well as funding for research stays abroad are special components of our programme.
Key facts
PhD students will be introduced to specific research areas of the faculty, including Economic Policy Analysis, Financial Markets and Regulation, and Quantitative Methods and Analysis of Big Data and have the opportunity to be involved in research projects in these and other areas. Our international faculty provides a variety of research opportunities, examples are outlined in the attached.
Programme Structure
Research topics:
- Economic development and institutions; monetary and fiscal policies; economic choices and energy transition; financial risk management; international businesses and markets; investment and optimization tools; the evaluation of public policies; behavioral economics and economic decisions.
- The themes of contemporary sociological research, including the analysis of social and demographic change; state and market: comparative studies; welfare and social policies; studies of social inequalities (class, cohort, gender, sociology of education) and social stratification;
- The study and implementation, with a view to economic, environmental and social sustainability, of economic development models, models and tools for the management of natural resources, models and tools for the management of businesses, institutions, organizations and profit and non-profit organizations.

General requirements
Admission to the Doctoral School is on a competitive basis. The procedure consists of two stages and a third stage for the Doctoral Programme in Sociology and Social Research.
In the first stage candidates are shortlisted assessing their curriculum, research proposal and reference letters (if any). Shortlisted candidates to the Doctoral Programmes in Economics will be asked to take part in an interview in Trento.
Application MUST include
- copy of ID (European citizens) or passport
- degree certificate or self-certification with the transcript of records (see details in the call)
- research proposal in English (max. 3000 words) with a short abstract (max. 150 words) and bibliography
