Overview
The PhD East Asian Studies training program at Freie Universität Berlin is designed to develop core competences that are central for conducting discipline-based research in and on East Asia, as well as a set of transferable skills that enable doctoral candidates to develop successful careers either in academia or in policy-relevant employment.

- All doctoral candidates are encouraged to a minimum of six months of conducting original research in the region based at a partner university in East Asia and to participate in a two-week Summer School.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The scientific focus of the program, of course, also determines the curriculum which is offered to you and is designed to support your research. The core course of the GEAS graduate program are the GEAS Institutional Theory Course and Research Design in the first (or second) semester.
- The courses combine different approaches, domains and dynamics of institutional theory and are designed to give doctoral candidates a deeper understanding of the research focus of GEAS, the study of institutions.
- In the course of the program, doctoral candidates will encounter different phases of work, ranging from periods where doctoral candidates will work in larger or smaller groups to phases where they will predominantly focus on their own research projects.
