About the programme
The Department of Education and Curriculum Studies at the University of Johannesburg offers teaching and supervision for undergraduate and post graduate study in a wide range of areas, fulfilling a pivotal role in the Initial Teacher Education (ITE/pre-service) and the continuous professional development of teachers (CPTD/in-service).
Its Education - Education and Curriculum Studies are designed for both novice and mid-career professionals who are interested in developing deeper conceptual understanding of educational issues and who aspire to become teachers.
Students in the programmes represent diverse nationalities, academic interests and professional backgrounds. A significant number are undergraduate South African students and citizens of SADC and other countries in Africa. Current and recent graduates include policy analysts, adult educators, fieldworkers in democracy and human rights education and leaders from both the national and provincial education departments.

Structure:
- The PhD (Education) requires a candidate to undertake research at an advanced academic level culminating in the production, defence and acceptance of a thesis.
- The candidate is required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the field of Education.

General requirements
- Prospective candidates will have obtained a MEd; or
- Prospective candidates will have obtained a teacher’s diploma/teaching qualification, plus an appropriate master’s degree as well as work experience in the field of study.
Academic performance&%2358; students need to have attained a minimum of 65% in their previous degree.
If 65% was not attained, prior learning and experience in the field may be taken into consideration and students could be allowed to register based on a pre-registration research proposal which is accepted by the Department in which the student will be registering.
