About the programme
The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences presents degrees in fields ranging from the proverbial A to Z – from actuaries to zoologists, and consists of 13 departments.
All degree programmes are designed to develop problem-solving individuals who can easily adapt to changing circumstances and take the lead in their chosen fields of specialisation. The qualifications awarded are of world-class and provide access to a multitude of career opportunities for dynamic and creative people.
In the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, we strive to continuously improve our high impact research and significantly address the national shortage of PhD graduates that respond to global and local challenges. This Mathematical Sciences - Actuarial Science programme is offered at the University of Pretoria.
Programme Structure
Structure:
- A doctoral study is assessed on the basis of a doctoral thesis in the traditional format or in the form of a collection of published works, creative works and/or other scholarly contributions (articles and essays etc.).
- Oral defense: The faculty regulations may determine that an oral defense should form part of the academic requirements for the qualification.
- A professional doctorate is assessed on the outcome of the research component as well as the required coursework modules in accordance with the approved faculty regulations.

- Research master’s degree in Actuarial Science or relevant master’s degree
- A CV with contactable references may be required
- A copy of final master’s dissertation may be required
- An admission interview may be required
- At least 60% for the research component at master’s level
