About the programme
People's learning and the conditions for learning within various human areas of activity are also studied under Education at Uppsala University. Learning is people's development of knowledge, competence, perceptions and attitudes.
Educational phenomena can be studied on different levels:
- On an individual and group level, such as changes in the individual and in their conditions for learning and the interplay between individuals in different social groups
- On the level that relates to the education situation, the organisation and management of it and the methods of teaching, upbringing and other systematic influences
- On a societal level – the educational activities in relation to the various goals of society in a historical and comparative perspective.
Programme Structure
Research areas:
- Education is concerned with different aspects of upbringing, formation, education, learning, teaching and the prerequisites for and implementation of other social processes.
- It also concerns matters relating to governance, appraisal and leadership as well as digital media, communicative practices and aspects of diversity.
- Areas of research include, for example, how and why different forms of values, knowledge and skills arise, are maintained and change among and between generations, groups and individuals.

General requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for PhD Programmes if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification;
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle; or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
