About

As a postgraduate Geography student (doctoral student) at Umea University you are employed by the department. Vacant doctoral positions are always advertised. One to three doctoral services are usually advertised annually.

Overview

Doctoral students' theses usually connect to one of the department's research directions within which professors and associate professors conduct research. Most of the research activities are financed by external funds, which means that the dissertations are often written within the framework of any of these projects.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

  • Research studies provide in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge of great importance for future careers in the university world or some other part of the labor market. 
  • Central parts of doctoral education are about developing analytical ability to formulate problems and carry out scientific investigations. 
  • These skills also provide a critical approach and the tools to review other scientific work. 
  • The program also includes learning to work independently to after completed education being able to initiate, operate and complete projects.
