Overview
It is the ambition of our department to have about ten active doctoral students. We aim to admit a couple of new students each year and that the same number complete their studies.
About twenty professors and associate professors, and senior lecturers, are supervisors for the doctoral students.

- The programme at Umea University aiming at a PhD degree in Political Science (filosofie doktorsexamen) consists of 240 ECTS.
- The licentiate degree in political science (filosofie licentiatexamen) consists of 120 ECTS (equivalent to up to two years of full time studies).

General requirements
- Hold a second-cycle (Master’s/advanced-level) degree.
- Have completed at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 90 ECTS in Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, or an equivalent subject, and at least 60 ECTS at advanced level.
- Doctoral studies are preferably conducted within one or more of the department’s five research profiles.
- Applications are only accepted through advertised doctoral positions published on the university website.
- Applications are assessed only in connection with an open call; pre-evaluation of applications is not conducted.
