Overview
The PhD program “Medical Life Science and Technology” at Technical University of Munich is a structured postgraduate program within the TUM School of Medicine aimed at students with a background in medicine, engineering or life sciences.

- The key research areas represented in the program are oncology, neuroscience, immunology/infection, biomedical imaging, cardiovascular research, and molecular medicine.
- The main purpose of the program is to give students a thorough scientific training and the tools to become successful and independent scientists.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- In order to graduate, students must achieve a total of 180 ECTS points. 32 ECTS points must be earned through various curricular activities, whilst a total of 148 ECTS points are awarded for written dissertation and oral defense.
- The standard duration of study is 6 semesters, including the oral defense. Under certain circumstances, the PhD executive committee may grant an extension of up to 2 semesters. The period of study may not exceed 8 semesters, including the defense.
- The compulsory coursework consists of different modules. Within each module students must successfully attend and complete one or more curricular activities. While most of the modules have a purely scientific content, and are focused on the six key disciplines of the program, others – like transferable skills seminars – offer extradisciplinary training, rounding out the students’ education.

General requirements
Both external and internal applicants must hold one of the following degrees to enter the program:
- Entry level with an MSc: Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent degree in medicine, biology, engineering, psychology, medicine, or related subjects.
- Entry level for TUM medical students: Applicants must pass the first part of the "Ärztliche Prüfung" prior to apply. Once they are admitted to the program, these students can complete both their MD and PhD.
Tuition Fee
TUM does not charge any tuition fees for a doctorate.
