Their projects at the Faculty span all fields in archaeological research, from fieldwork to lab work and heritage issues, from prehistoric to modern times, worldwide.
Features
- Embedded in the Faculty’s research groups, PhD projects are carried out under the personal supervision of two staff members.
- The Graduate School of Archaeology at Leiden University is responsible for the overall coordination and monitoring of the PhD track, including the admission procedures, supervision and PhD (skills) training program.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- Annual Progress Evaluation with supervisors and update of TSP
- Progress review meeting (with Graduate School Annual review team)
- Conducting research and writing of the dissertation
- Taking training courses (for both academic and transferable skills) at one of the National Research Schools or your institute, as well as courses offered as part of the University Teaching Program for PhDs.

General requirements
- Receiving a PhD degree is considered the highest educational proof of possessing the research skills necessary to carry out independent academic research.
- PhD candidates are stimulated to present research results at international scientific meetings and publish in high-ranking scientific journals. Doing so, they build their own scientific network and track record to obtain the most favorable prospect for the continuation of their career after graduation.
Tuition Fee
There are currently no registration costs at the Faculty of Archaeology. Employed PhD candidates are exempted from paying university tuition fees. However, in some cases, contract or external PhD candidates are asked
