The Department of Health Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in health sciences who will drive progress and innovation in public health.
Vision
Complex societal health problems within and outside the Netherlands require innovative, multidisciplinary and sustainable solutions. Within the department of Health Sciences, staff members from different fields of expertise actively engage with societal partners, (future) patients and citizens in their research.
We aim to provide solutions to improve public health and wellbeing, and to reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing in specific groups. We collaborate intensively with our partners inside and outside the VU to create direct societal impact by influencing public health policy making.

General requirements
In order to apply for a PhD programme at VU Amsterdam you will need:
- Master's degree certificate or equivalent qualification
- Curriculum vitae
- Preliminary research proposal (up to 800 words to indicate fields of interest)
- Copy of ID
- Language requirements/scores from TOEFL
Tuition Fee
- External PhD candidates pay tuition fees on a yearly basis. However, faculties offer exemptions and tuition fee waivers under certain conditions.
