Overview
Our scientists in the department of Art and Culture, History, and Antiquity at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam are specialists in the fields of media, art, design, architecture, history, classical languages, Assyriology and archaeology and, on the basis of their respective disciplines, they also collaborate on various themes.
Research
Research conducted by various historians, art historians and archaeologists focuses on heritage, memory and the history of the landscape. Cross-disciplinary cooperation also exists in the field of research methods and the Digital Humanities.
The History education and research is distinguishing itself with an approach in which European history is not the obvious starting point, and which includes long-term perspectives. The department's research is organised primarily in the VU's Interfaculty Research Institute for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage, CLUE+.
