About the programme
Research in Mathematics and Science Education establishes a scientific foundation for developing and enhancing instruction in these subjects by investigating the processes of learning and teaching in these subjects, how the specific subject content is communicated in various contexts, as well as how individuals and groups across different educational levels develop and utilize knowledge.
A particular focus at Luleå University of Technology is put on students' motivation, skills, and attitudes toward the subject area, as well as the development of teaching methods in modern learning environments.

General requirements
- An applicant meets the general entry requirements for doctoral (third-cycle) studies if he or she has been awarded a Master’s (second-cycle) qualification, has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle credits, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another way, in Sweden or elsewhere.
- In addition to the requirement for basic qualifications, a minimum of 90 credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, or engineering is required, of which a maximum of 30 credits can consist of courses in the didactics of the subjects.
