Overview
About the programme
Ore geology means that you learn to understand the processes that concentrate metals and minerals in the crust, you learn the methods used to find mineable deposits, and you learn to translate theory into practice. The latter is very important since ore geologists often spend a lot of time in the field, sometimes in exotic locations.
The Ore Geology research at Luleå University of Technology aims at describing the geological conditions that lead to economic concentrations of minerals, as well as how these minerals can be used for a sustainable societal development.
Programme Structure
Research areas include:
- We work with orogenic gold, volcanic massive sulphides, iron-oxide copper-gold, apatite-iron ores and porphyry copper-gold ores, which are all ore types present in Sweden.
- The research is done in close cooperation with mining and exploration companies and deals with geochemical, textural, isotopic, structural and stratigraphic aspects of how and where the ores occur.
- An important part of our research is the study of ore deposits in other parts of the world by participating in international field trips.
