Overview
Structural Engineering supports and maintains the built environment, where structures must be safe, serviceable, durable, aesthetically pleasing and sustainable.
Structural engineering applies maths and physics to traditional construction materials such as concrete, stone, steel, timber and glass and new generation of materials, including aluminium, polymers and carbon fibre.
Aims
The Research Subject at Luleå University of Technology has a mission to preserve, transfer, and create knowledge in structural and fire engineering domains and has three goals:
- to educate students in structural and fire engineering;
- to research and develop methods to prolong the lifespan of existing structures;
- to research and develop structural design methods that promote circularity in the construction industry.
Programme Structure
Research projects include:
- Hydrogen safety
- Multiscale study on bond-slip failure in trough bridges subjected to fatigue loading
- Kiruna City – Mining movements induced damage on existing buildings
- IN2TRACK3 - Research into optimized and future railway infrastructure
- Sustainable technologies for the direct and bulk conversion of waste biomass into graphene
- Demolition of prestressed concrete bridge
- Kalix bridge project – condition assessment of existing bridges
