Overview
A candidate for a Humanities PhD degree at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline.
Students may specialize in linguistics, history, anthropology, philosophy and religion, or literature, film, and media studies, though they are expected to go beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries and cultivate knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the PhD programme, graduates will be able to:
- Become a scholar in one of the humanistic disciplines in the Division, either Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy or Religion, apart from cultivating knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction.
- Adopt a comparative and intercultural perspective to investigate into his/her specialized area, whether focusing on China or other parts of the world.
- Identify important issues and topics, command all the relevant primary sources and evaluate their values.
- Become well versed in representative scholarly works in his/her field and examine critically major narratives, interpretations, themes and/or paradigms ever produced.
- Apply textual and/or contextual analysis to the study of his/her specialized subject and design appropriate methodologies, techniques, tools and/or models for his/her research.
- Through presentations, discussions and writing papers and the thesis, deliver his/her research findings in a professional and proficient manner.

- Applicants seeking admission to a doctoral degree program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree with a proven record of outstanding performance from a recognized institution; or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years.
