Overview
The PhD Programme in Molecular, Experimental and Computational Medicine (MECM), offers advanced interdisciplinary training in molecular medicine, translational research, and data science.
The emphasis on hands-on experience, combined with ongoing research innovation, allows students to acquire essential skills to face the challenges of a constantly evolving scientific landscape.
Three different curricula are available:
- MECM Standard: it trains highly qualified researchers in molecular and biological sciences, emphasizing disease mechanisms and developing innovative therapeutic strategies. It integrates genetics, pharmacology, and biochemistry with advanced technologies such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, systems biology and molecular imaging.
- MECM Clinical: it blends experimental research with direct clinical practice. This dual approach develops strong skills in both science and medicine, aiming to accelerate the translation of research into diagnostic and therapeutic innovations.
- MECM Data Science: it combines experimental research —both basic and clinical— with advanced data science skills, focusing on analyzing and interpreting data from various sources, including omics technologies, imaging, and flow cytometry. PhD students will gain expertise in bioinformatics tools, predictive modeling, and algorithm development.
Graduates of the program are equipped for a wide range of career paths, aligned with the program’s educational goals.
They can pursue careers in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and health-tech companies, contributing to the development of new technologies and innovative healthcare solutions, or support the growth of clinical research groups, thus fostering the creation of new and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Also, academic careers are a viable option, both in universities and non-academic research institutions.
Programme Structure
The PhD course in Molecular, Experimental and Computational Medicine is articulated into three main types of didactic activities:
- Research activities: every student is assigned a research topic under the supervision of a Supervisor; the research activity in the laboratory is a full-time activity
- Mandatory activities: seminar series (Journal Club on a specific topic between the speaker and the PhD students followed by a public seminar on the same topic)
- Elective activities: seminars and courses, offered by the Humanitas University and Humanitas Research Labs, which the PhD students can freely join according to their research field and interests.
Other didactic activities:
Linguistics, Research management and funding, Intellectual property are the main topics.

General requirements
MECM Curriculum – Standard and Data Science
Applicants must hold a “laurea magistrale” (pursuant to D.M. 270/2004) or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad (generally a Master’s Degree), in one of the subjects listed in the official Call for Applicants. Candidates who are awaiting the award of their qualification may also apply, provided they have passed all required exams at the time of application and obtain the degree before the academic activities begin.
MECM – Clinical Curriculum
Applicants must be enrolled in the Medical Register and hold a specialist medical qualification. Applications are also accepted from medical doctors in specialist training, provided they are enrolling in the final year of a Specialisation School at Humanitas University.
