Biology
The education and research at the Department of Biology are wide-ranging and cover all the levels from cell and molecular biology, physiology and genetics to individual species, interaction between species and evolutionary phenomena on population and community level. In addition to humans and animals, the research topics cover plants and microbes and their environment. The ecotoxicology, ecology and conservation genetics research of environmental problems caused by the human impact are a central part of the department’s operations.
Geography and Geology
The interdisciplinary research at the Department of Geography and Geology is focuses on the dynamic processes of the Earth at various scales of space and time. The department hosts various specialized researchers and research groups with study topics ranging from sedimentology and historical environmental changes to innovation environments and urban structures.

Doctoral Programme in Biology, Geography and Geology (BGG) at University of Turku offers high-quality and interdisciplinary doctoral training in natural science research. Traditionally strong areas in BGG are ecology, evolutionary biology, biodiversity, environmental science, physiology, genetics, physical geography, human geography and geology.
Application calls for a right to study are open annually in March and in September. In September call it is also possible to apply a fixed-term funded doctoral candidate position.

Living costs for Turku
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Funding
University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) annually allocates funds to providing a salary for a limited number of doctoral candidates in each doctoral programme. Funding may be for up to four years. The call for UTUGS funded positions is open once a year in September.
