Overview
The objectives of the Medical Sciences programme at University of Cyprus include:
- To cultivate the principles of research and innovation in Medicine and their utility to address unmet needs in disease pathophysiology, diagnostics, treatments and disease prevention pathways in a patient centered approach to improve health care outcomes and public health.
- To deliver high caliber research in different fields of Medicine (including but not limited to: internal medicine, surgery, neurology, cardiology, infectious diseases, paediatrics, oncology, psychiatry, rheumatology, nephrology, pharmacology, physiology, epidemiology and public health).
- To promote medical research in accordance to the principles and ethical frameworks dictated by international standards within the University of Cyprus (UCY) and other allied healthcare organisations in Cyprus.
- Consolidate the academic research orientation and profile of the Medical School of UCY by enhancing its contribution in the field of medical sciences through the delivery of impactful research.
Key Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the PhD programme, graduates will be able to:
- Exhibit thorough knowledge, comprehensive understanding and ability to critically evaluate and discuss the core literature in their field of research and the current topics of their specific research area.
- Apply quality scientific methods, techniques and best practices in their own research, demonstrate understanding of their limitations and show how these methods & techniques are used to interpret results and create knowledge.
- Demonstrate evidence of development of research skills and scientific communication, including oral presentation skills, scientific writing skills, autonomous thinking and problem solving.
- Display intellectual autonomy, disciplinary rectitude, academic professionalism and evidence of professional development.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
The expectation is that PhD graduates will develop transferable skills, knowledge and expertise, critical to developing independent researchers that will take on leadership roles within academia and clinical or research organisations in Cyprus or abroad. For clinicians undertaking this programme, progress in current knowledge and practices will contribute to the introduction of newer methods and approaches in medical practice including the conduct of clinical trials/ clinical research, which is currently underdeveloped in our country.
For scientists or researchers in fields associated to medicine, this programme will open new prospects of employability given their specialization in a particular medical area or it will equip them with the expertise needed to pursue a career in the field of research or academia.

General requirements
- Medical Degree from a recognized University (for medical doctors) or
- Bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from a recognized University – relative subjects (for nonmedical graduates)
- At least two letters of recommendation by University Professors familiar with the candidate and his/her academic performance. Candidates are expected to request letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies of the Medical School
- Evidence of good knowledge of the English language (at IELTS level or above)
- Each of the potential research supervisors may also add desirable criteria, depending on the field and the particular topic of the PhD, and quality indicators
