Overview
As a Accounting student at Hanken School of Economics you have access to a broad range of courses, conferences and workshops both in Finland and abroad. You also have full access to an extensive set of national and international financial databases.
The major is affiliated with KATAJA, the Graduate School of Accounting and the Nordic Accounting Research Network. You are also encouraged and financially supported to participate and present your work in international conferences.

General requirements
- A research-based Master's degree with good grades from a recognised university constitutes the basis for admission to doctoral studies. The Master's degree has to include a comprehensive research based thesis.
- If the thesis is to comprise of a series of published research articles - which is the format the department recommends - a description of the statement objective, literature, method and data for the first project (article) should be presented in the research plan. In addition, there should be some preliminary ideas, not necessarily including literature reviews, of how at least two other articles could be written within the same problem area.
- In order to be admitted as a PhD student the student must have sufficient and relevant previous studies in the field or major to which they apply to.

Funding
Hanken offers funding for doctoral students who study full time. Hanken also offers help in applying for funding.
There are three main potential funding options:
- External grant funding from one of the foundations supporting research in the areas relevant to Hanken PhD students, for example the Foundation for Economic Education.
- Employment in an externally funded project; this alternative is particularly relevant for late-stage doctoral students;
- Scholarships from the Funds at Hanken can be applied for if/when these are announced. The scholarships are subject to availability.
