The PhD Programme in Computer Science (PCS) is a PhD programme offered by the graduate school of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS).

PCS was created by the participating institutions of the Center for Computational Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2005 with the mission to provide high quality PhD education on a high scientific level within three years.

PCS is open to students from Germany and from abroad who hold a Master's degree in Computer Sciences (or equivalent). After the successful completion of the PCS programme, the international degree of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or alternatively the degree of Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor rerum naturalium) will be awarded.

Programme Structure

The PCS programme is designed as a three years programme and is subdivided into two simultaneously running parts: the research part and the academic achievement part. In the following figure shows the structure of PCS.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • To get a PCS admission, a master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, telecommunication engineering, communication engineering or an equivalent research direction is required. Normally, achievements in the following areas with the minimum amount of 120 ECTS credit points have to be proven by transcript:

    • Practical Computer Science
(especially operating systems, distributed systems, software technology, databases and information systems, telematics)
    • Theoretical Computer Science
(especially algorithms, logic design theory, complexity theory, coding and cryptology, formal logic and semantics, computer algebra, artificial intelligence)
    • Technical Computer Science
(in particular expertise in the field of hardware)

Tuition Fee Per Year

  • Free International
  • Free EU/EEA

Usually, the research group or department provides funding to their doctoral students in the form of either an employment contract or a scholarship (approx. monthly amount of scholarship or net salary: 1100-1400 EUR).

StudyPortals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
