UNE was formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. The University became fully independent in 1954 and pioneered teaching to external students by correspondence, making UNE Australia's most experienced provider of distance and now online education.


The University of New England has ten Schools specialising in a wide range academic fields:

Housing services

Each of UNE's eight Residential Colleges has a unique culture, and offers different accommodation options and facilities. Library services

The University Library includes Dixson Library, the Law Library and the UNE Heritage Centre, as well as the Library's virtual presence on the Internet.

Medical services

The UNE Medical Centre is located within the Tablelands Clinical School building, adjacent to Armidale Hospital in Butler St. International students are able to access this facility and use their Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for a number of different health services.
