History
Founded in 1773 with the name “Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun” (Imperial School of Naval Engineering) during the reign of Mustafa III, Istanbul Technical University is a prominent and pioneering university of engineering and architecture with many innovative studies in science, technology, research and development.

Research
TU has 360 laboratories and 13 research centers. With 23 engineering programs accredited by ABET Accreditation, ITU is the world’s leader among universities. Students participating in International Exchange Graduate Programs complete a part of their education at one of the partner universities in the USA and receive a dual diploma. ITU offers a number of double major programs and is the top university in Turkey providing a broad range of Erasmus exchange programs with more than 900 international agreements.ITU is the cradle of science, industry and technology conducting over 200 R&D projects in the scope of ARI Teknokent.

Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report presents all the top universities from the U.S. and 60 other countries around the world. They measure the rate of students going to their second year of studies, as well as the rate of students who graduate. It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Housing services
There are six personnel housings of which ITÜ personnel take advantage. Two separate personnel housings are located in Ayazaga Central Campus. Ayazaga Houses has a capacity of 304 family- type flats and 125 studio flats that young researchers benefit from, as for Vadi Houses they have a capacity of 34 flats. When it comes to other housings of ITÜ, there are (26 flats) in Besiktas Akatlar, (3 flats) in Bakirköy Florya, (8 flats) in Emirgan and (1 flat) in Maçka.
Library services
ITÜ maintains a central library (Mustafa Inan Library) and 6 other libraries in various locations. Our central library is open 7/24. The other libraries are:

- Architecture Library - Taskisla Campus - Faculty of Architecture
- Management Library - Maçka Campus - Faculty of Management
