History

1994 - 2014 was an exciting time for Southern Cross University as it evolved from what was a Teachers College, in the 1970s, into a fully-fledged University with its own identity in 1994.

Education

We offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and many are available in a dynamic online form. Whether studying on-campus, online, or both, we deliver exciting, contemporary and high quality learning experiences.

Research

For 20 years, Southern Cross University has been conducting research and research training that has global and regional impact and relevance. It is has developed world-class expertise across a range of research fields, and in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia national report received the top rating of 'well above world standard' in six key research areas.

Services

Student services

  • Students often use the Counselling Service when they want to talk about adjustment to University, coping with homesickness, study pressures, reducing stress, overcoming procrastination, relationship issues, or family problems.
  • The Counselling Service aims to encourage academic success and to assist students to increase their enjoyment of study and University life, by helping to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety caused by study, personal or family pressures.

Housing services

  • Southern Cross University offers services to help you find private rental off-campus (UniStays) or accommodation at one of our on-campus residential colleges (SCU Village Lismore and Coffs Harbour).
  • A range of on-campus accommodation options are available at four residential colleges across the Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses. Apartments are modern and fully furnished, with their own kitchen, lounge, dining area and bathroom.

Library services

Southern Cross University has libraries at each of its Lismore, Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses.  The libraries provide quiet study areas, collaborative spaces, bookable group study rooms, computing and wireless facilities, and access to online and print resources.  The University also provides study centres in Grafton and Byron Bay for students to use for individual or group study.

ICT services

Purpose computing labs are available and aim to:

  • Support and maintenance of the general purpose computing labs.
  • Provide standard operating environment,with a standard suite of software available.
  • Prepare of software builds for computers based on teaching requirements.
  • Support for students on computing matters associated with the use of the labs and associated network services.

Medical services

SCU students at the Gold Coast and Lismore have access to the SCU Health Clinic’s general practitioners who can provide bulk-billed medical services. Services vary depending on location of the clinic.

Student Life

Campus life

Southern Cross University is a vibrant, contemporary Australian university with beautiful campuses at the Gold Coast, Lismore and Coffs Harbour.

Located halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, the Coffs Harbour campus is close to some of the finest surf beaches and a spectacular World Heritage listed rainforest. Situated on the southern side of the city, the campus is minutes from international standard sporting facilities and the airport. Student accommodation in a peaceful setting is located just minutes away from the academic precinct.

Sports facilities

Southern Cross University’s Lismore campus has two main sports areas which are used by SCU students/staff, SCU clubs and the general public. These are: The Maurie Ryan Oval and the Darrel Chapman Sports Facility. The latter includes 4 × tennis courts, 2 × netball courts and 2 × basketball courts plus BBQ area and toilet block with lights.

Student clubs

Joining an SCU club/society or playing in a community sporting/recreation team or group is a great way to meet people and pursue an interest outside your academic life here at SCU.
