History

The Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF) was officially established in 2004, and The Cyprus Institute one year later, in 2005. The Institute officially commenced its operations in 2007, and over time has established its five research centers, its graduate school that now offers both Master’s and PhD degrees.

Education

The Cyprus Institute’s Graduate School offers exclusively graduate programs attracting competitive students from all parts of the world, providing them with modern knowledge and skills to serve innovative areas of science, society and tomorrow's economy.

The Educational portfolio of CyI’s graduate school consists of PhD programs and MSc programs along with a training portfolio which includes internships, schools, seminars and workshops. 

Graduate studies at CyI Graduate School are research-oriented, providing the opportunity to students to work alongside distinguished faculty, get trained in the use of cutting- edge methods and techniques.

Research

The Cyprus Institute is a champion in competitive research.Our research activities focus on scientific and socioeconomic problems of regional relevance and global significance, integrated in thematic research thrusts that are either vertically or horizontally distributed across five interdisciplinary Research Centers, developed through strategic partnerships with leading international institutions in their thematic areas:

  • The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC)
  • The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC)
  • The Climate & Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  • The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Center (STeDI-RC)

Can pursue work in the private or public sectors of Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, History and Art Architecture, Museum Studies, or the Study, Rehabilitation, and Management of the Historical Structured Environment.

  • MSc in Environmental Sciences

Graduates will be equipped to pursue careers in Environmental Consultant Agencies, Environmental Monitoring divisions of public and private institutions, Research Institutions, and Universities.

  • MSc Simulation and Data Science

Student services

Dedicated office spaces are offered to all of our students either at the CyI Graduate school or within the research centers. These spaces are designed to facilitate focused study, research, and collaboration, empowering students to excel in their academic pursuits.

Housing services

There is a diverse range of housing options available in close proximity to our institution. Our Graduate School team takes pride in guiding students through the accommodation process, providing advice, and assisting them in making decisions about their housing arrangements.

Library services

As part of the long-term collaboration and the MoU established between the CyI and the University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign, the students, faculty and research staff of The Cyprus Institute have full access to the electronic library of the University of Illinois. This includes access to all scientific journals, eBooks and databases to which the University subscribes.

ICT services

The Information Technology Office of the Cyprus Institute provides computing facilities and related services in support of IT in CyI. The facilities and service includes networks, telephones, electronic mail and a range of business applications and services.

Medical services

The Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) has assigned a Student Welfare Officer who is available to meet with students to discuss and resolve matters that are of concern. In addition, European students in Cyprus are entitled to enroll under The General Healthcare System Of Cyprus (GESY).

Campus life

  • The Cyprus Institute has its central administrative facilities in its Athalassa Campus, located within the Aglantzia Municipality in Nicosia. These facilities include administrative buildings and offices, event rooms and auditoriums, research laboratories, the Graduate school and a cafeteria. 
  • The Graduate School is housed in a renovated building in Athalassa campus in Nicosia. The building houses the Office of Graduate Studies, classrooms, seminar rooms and conference rooms. It also includes office space for students including quiet spaces, a library and a student lounge. 
  • The student lounge is located in the Graduate School’s ground floor and is a comfortable area open to students.

Sports facilities

Indoor court (basketball, volleyball etc.) and a gym.

Student clubs

There is a variety of clubs where students can get involved and be part of an active student community. One of them is the CyI music band that consists of musicians from within our staff and student body. Through performances at campus events our music band enriches the cultural tapestry of our institution and serves as a platform for students to showcase their musical talents, fostering a sense of community and artistic expression.

All Master’s and PhD programs of study provided by The Cyprus Institute Graduate School are accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA) and the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MOESY). CYQAA is the competent authority responsible for ensuring the quality of higher education in Cyprus, based on the standards and guidelines provided by the European Network for Quality Assurance (ENQA). In addition, all CyI programs of study adhere to the Bologna Process second and third cycle degrees, as well as international Master’s and PhD standard practices.
