History

  • On 26 January 1988 — with the commencement of the University of Technology, Sydney, Act — the former New South Wales Institute of Technology became the University of Technology, Sydney.
  • The New South Wales Institute of Technology was established in 1964. The School of Design of the former Sydney College of the Arts was incorporated into the Institute on 25 January 1988.

UTS offers over 130 undergraduate and 210 postgraduate courses across traditional and emerging disciplines such as architecture, built environment, business, communication, design, education, engineering, information technology, international studies, law, midwifery, nursing, pharmacy and science.

Research

Our world leading research centres span a range of disciplines, including physical, biological and engineering sciences, and contemporary fields such as design, nanotechnology and sustainability. Our researchers provide practical and relevant solutions to issues of national and international importance and equip graduates with the latest discipline specific skills and practices.

Library services

From historic Haymarket to its new digs in UTS’s gleaming new landmark, the UTS Library is finally taking its place in the heart of campus – with the spacious and serene public UTS Reading Room as its neighbour.

ICT services

Many of the labs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are near printers. Some have an internal phone. Wherever you are studying on campus, you will have access to the technology and software you need for your studies. The general access computer labs offer both OSX and Windows 7 platforms.

Medical services

The Health Service provides friendly and confidential medical services to students, staff and their families.

UTS Health Service is a QPA-accredited practice that has been supporting the community of UTS for many years. We aim to provide excellent healthcare in high-quality general practice setting to all UTS staff, students and their families. 

Campus life

The UTS campus is centred around the Tower (Building 1) on Broadway, stretching down to Haymarket near Chinatown and to Blackfriars in Chippendale. Some specialist buildings are located outside the main campus hub, like the UTS Rugby Australia Building in the Moore Park sporting precinct and UTS Tech Lab at Botany.

Sports facilities

UTS is an athlete friendly university with a respected Elite Athlete Program that has assisted many of our UTS rowers. This program helps them to balance and fulfil their sport commitments and studies. To give our student athletes every opportunity for success, we recognise a need for specific scholarships and additional programs.

Clubs and societies are a great way to connect with other students, work on exciting projects, develop industry networks and have fun.You can meet representatives from student clubs and societies during Orientation, UTS Clubs Day and via the ActivateUTS website.
