History
The Scuola Normale of Pisa was formally founded on the 18th of October, 1810, by a Napoleonic decree which dealt with “places of public instruction” in Tuscany, a province of the French empire since 1807.
Education
Two types of course are available: the undergraduate course and the PhD course. The teaching activity is distributed among three academic structures: the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, placed in Pisa, and the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, located in Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.
Research
A highly qualifying feature of the Normale way is the strong link between teaching and research that is a characteristic of both the undergraduate and the graduate programmes of the Scuola. The research structures of the two Faculties welcome students with a relevant study interest, enabling them to collaborate in a mature way with the activities of the researchers.

Housing services
Those who can use the service:
- Undergraduate students, and fellowship students.
- Graduate students can live in one of the residences if there is space.
Each residence has a laundry service for washing and ironing clothing. All of the residences also have a laundry area with coin-operated washing machines, irons and ironing boards.
Library services
The Library is currently housed in two independent buildings, the 16th-century Palazzo della Gherardesca, also called Palazzo dell’Orologio, and Palazzo del Capitano, built in the same period, as well as in a large area of Palazzo della Carovana, historic centre of the Scuola Normale.
Campus life
At the Scuola Normale teachers, researchers and students live in the same environment, switching between teaching activities and research in the labs and attending the cultural events organised by and within the Scuola, the seminar method of teaching, the prevalence of interaction and discussion within the academic environment, as opposed to more traditional lectures: these are the basic ingredients of the typical college life of the Scuola Normale.
The Scuola Normale offers citizens, students, researchers, lecturers and experts alike a wide range of scientific and cultural initiatives, training and refresher courses in the various fields of knowledge in both arts and sciences.
