National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was established during Japanese occupation in January 1931 as "Tainan Technical College" with only one campus, Cheng Kung campus, covering an area of 18.3 hectares
The organization of the university can be divided into the three systems of teaching and researching, research centers and administrative support, along with other subordinate divisions. The NCKU teaching and researching system has 9 colleges (College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Planning and Design, College of Management, College of Medicine, College of Social Sciences and College of Bioscience and Biotechnology), 43 undergraduate programs, 75 master degree programs, 54 doctoral programs and 18 master's degree for working professionals.
According to Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in 2011, NCKU has been listed within the top 1% of all research institutes based on the number of citations of papers published in 13 out of 22 academic fields in the past 10 years. Papers published by NCKU on engineering, material science and computer science fields have been ranked 10th, 27th and 40th respectively, a performance that takes the lead nationwide, especially in these particular fields.
NCKU graduates have topped in the "Favorite Recruits" rankings for many years and many NCKU alumni have become leaders in many different fields. For example, more than a hundred NCKU alumni have assumed the position of deans in local and foreign universities. According to annual surveys conducted by prestigious Taiwanese magazines including Common Wealth, Global News and Cheers, NCKU graduates have been awarded "Most Favored Recruits for Industry" every year since 1993.
In 1988, NCKU founded the International Cooperation Team and later established the Office of International Affairs (OIA) in 2007. The role of OIA includes managing, coordonating and implementing all aspects of NCKU's international affairs, such as learning, research and care of international students and teaching staff. NCKU uses its excellent R&D capabilty and extensive overseas alumni network to cultivate connections in Southeast Asia and then expand them all over the world.
Each and every college is located in the main campus area, thus enabling students to choose and attend courses across disciplines and to acquire multiple professional skills. The proximity of the campuses promotes knowledge exchange and sharing among students and faculties.
When National Cheng Kung University was established in January, 1931, the NCKU library was also established.In early 1984, the library opened a branch in the College of Medicine. With the increase of the material in the library, the capacity in the main library was far from enough.
The aims of the computer and network center are
1) creating an Information Technology(IT) service infrastructure;2) supporting researching, teaching, and training;3) handling the computerization of university the administration;4) making good-link and interaction between university, government institutions and industry;5) building up campus networks for all of the faculty and students.
This division is under the subordination of the Office of Student Affairs. Its official capacity is the responsibility for the protection of campus health care and sanitation.
Our goals are to provide our students and faculty with proper concepts of health, good hygiene and to strengthen physical and mental health in order to provide a healthy and safe campus environment for studying and other.
The Housing Service Division was founded as an agency under the Office of Student Affairs. It functions to highlight the fact that dorm life constitutes an essential aspect of a student’s college career. Nowadays, a student dormitory is more than a place for meals and accommodation, it is also a venue for life education in which students are allowed to learn and internalize social and interpersonal values and behaviors. Therefore, in addition to providing high quality services, the Housing Service Division should work to create an excellent residential environment and realize a philosophy of harmonious coexistence between people in order to cultivate the value of living a carefree life in resident students.
International Relations Division
The International Relations Division is primarily engaged in promoting and facilitating the international collaborations and exchange programs with mainly academic institutions around the world.
International Student Affairs Division
The International Student Affairs Division serves as a vital platform connecting the NCKU administration with international students and visiting scholars to our University.
There are presently 131 student associations, which can be categorized into seven types: Departmental Associations, Academic Associations, Art Associations, Recreational Associations, Service Associations, Athletic Associations, and Social Associations.
NCKU has passed the Ministry of Education's University Evaluation for the 100th Academic Year with flying colors in 2012. For the previous term between the 96th and 100th academic years, NCKU has achieved an implementation rate exceeding 90% for the various goals set in its own intermediate university development plan.
