NTU's institutional predecessor was Taihoku Imperial University, founded in 1928 by the Japanese colonial administration. The first president was Shidehara Tan Tairaka Hiroshi. In 1945, the Republic of China won the war of resistance against Japan, and Taiwan was handed over to the Nationalist government of China.

About

History

After WW II and Taiwan's retrocession to Chinese Sovereignty, the R.O.C. government completed the taking-over work officially on November 15, 1945, with Dr. Tsung-lo Lo serving as the first president, and reorganized and renamed the school "National Taiwan University". The Faculty of Literature and Policitcs of TIU was divided into two colleges: the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Law.

Education

NTU has 11 colleges, 54 departments,107 graduate institutes, and eight master's and PhD programs, which range from the natural sciences to the humanities, society, and the arts. It offers more than 7,800 courses each semester, placing it tops in the nation in terms of both breadth of academic fields and volume of programs. Students who study at NTU become a part of the nation’s richest center of learning and are given the opportunity to receive a diverse, superlative education.

Services

Student services

  • The International Students Division:
Its key role is to assist and advise local and incoming international students. This service is organized into two branches:
  • The Study Abroad Section develops student exchange programs and coordinates summer programs abroad.
  • The International Students Section recruits, assists and advises international students, and processes scholarships. The team actively helps international students to become and feel part of NTU's academic communities, and promotes an active, balanced student life where cross-cultural exchanges and open dialogues are encouraged. 

Housing services

All international students can apply for accommodation. However, the University is NOT able to arrange accommodation for couples or families.

Library services

The NTU Library contains four million volumes.

ICT services

NTU offers wide computing availability on campus and provides webmail portals, multiple networking services, computer courses, distance learning services, cloud computing for storage, software share and mobile devices, such as MyNTU portal, NTU Space, NTU AppShare, NTU SoftBank and iNTU.

NTU's main location is a large garden-campus in the center of Taipei, and is easily accessible by public transport.
